SASSO Dual Purpose – five kinds (Frey’s Hatchery)

There are 5 kinds of SASSO Dual Purpose birds: Irona, Ciara, Silver, Scarlet, Ivory. For pictures, see the Freys Website.

Irona

The SASSO Irona is the heaviest of the four SASSO birds and is dark grey in colour. The female weighs 8 lbs at 75 weeks on average and is capable of laying 286 large, light brown eggs up to that age. Cockerels have an average bodyweight of 5.7 lbs at 12 weeks.
The Irona offers excellent meat quality and the chicks are feather-sexable.  All this makes the SASSO Irona a great option for dual-purpose production. This Irona easily adapts to all kinds of living arrangements.

Ciara

The SASSO Ciara has rich, dark feathers and can do well in backyard and free-range farms. Just like the Irona, this is a great egg layer and awesome meat producer. Pullets way on average 6.5 lbs at 75 weeks and are capable of producing 297 large, light brown eggs up to that age. Cockerels weigh 4.9 lbs at 12 weeks on average.
Chicks can be sex identified using their feathering.

Silver

The SASSO Silver is great for either egg or meat production. This beautiful bird lays approximately 283 eggs in its first year of production. The female weighs 6 lbs at 75 weeks and the male weighs 4 lbs at 14 weeks. The SASSO Silver has nice ash-grey feathering and is feather-sexable when hatched.

Scarlet

The SASSO Scarlet has red feathers. Pullets will lay 305 large, light brown eggs and weighs 6.5 lbs at 75 weeks on average, while producing 305 large eggs up to that age. They perform well in more challenging environments such as in free range systems and backyards. Cockerels have an average bodyweight of 4.96 lbs kg at 12 weeks, and offer great meat quality. Feathering can be used to identify the sex of the day-old chicks.

Ivory

The SASSO Ivory is the best layer of these 4 with 350 large, light brown eggs at 75 weeks and a weight of 4.4 lbs on average for females. Males weigh 4.33 lbs at 12 weeks on average. Day-old chicks are feather-sexable. This productive layer is highly adaptable.
