Cornish Cross Giants are fast growing and great for roasters and fryers. Ready to butcher in 11-14 weeks and can reach a mature weight of 5-10 lbs dressed.

Golden Laced Wyandottes, which originated in Wisconsin are known as a docile, good producer of brown eggs. They are a hardy, active, medium weight, dual-purpose variety that is used for production of both meat and eggs. The chicks do not grow as fast as some of the other dual-purpose breeds and therefore, are a poor choice for producing broiler meat. Their unusual, attractive plumage color pattern and docile nature are characteristics that are making this variety more popular each year. Standard weights at maturity are males-8 1/2 lbs. and hens-6 1/2 lbs
Silver Laced Wyandottes, which are the most popular Wyandotte variety, are the original variety of the Wyandotte breed. The general appearance of Wyandottes is a short, deep, wide-bodied bird. Their close fitting, rose comb is an advantage in cold climates where single combs sometimes freeze. The unusual, striking color pattern and docile nature are characteristics that make them a popular variety. They are a very good layer of brown eggs. Standard weights at maturity are males-8 1/2 lbs. and hens-6 1/2 lbs

Partridge Plymouth Rocks are a beautiful, rare variety of Plymouth Rocks, which is the most popular dual-purpose breeds. The partridge plumage pattern is very striking and is one of the most beautiful of all plumage patterns with the male pattern being completely different from that of the females. They have the same general performance characteristics as Barred Plymouth Rocks but not as much emphasis has been placed on improving egg production and egg size of the brown eggs which they produce. Standard weights at maturity are males-9 1/2 lbs. and hens-7 1/2 lbs.
Buff Plymouth Rocks are a relatively rare variety, which is not very well known. They are very attractive with solid rich golden-buff plumage. The male has a more brilliant luster than the female. Their appearance is very similar to Buff Orpingtons except their feathering is not nearly as loose. They have yellow skin rather than white and their bodies are longer. Most Buff Rocks are used for the production of brown eggs but they are also useful for production of fowl meat. Standard weights at maturity are males-9 1/2 lbs. and hens-7 1/2 lbs.

Delawares are a relatively new breed, which were first developed in the state of Delaware from off colored sports that occurred when Barred Plymouth Rock males were mated to New Hampshire females. Their plumage is the beautiful, attractive black and white Columbian color pattern. They have the same general shape as New Hampshire Reds, which is much shorter and more compact as compared with Plymouth Rocks. They are an excellent dual-purpose breed that efficiently produces large brown eggs. Standard weights at maturity are males-8 1/2 lbs. and hens-6 1/2 lbs.

Jersey Black Giants, which are very attractive, are the largest of the dual-purpose breeds. Although, they may have some white feathers from the time of hatching until they molt their juvenile plumage, they are solid black when mature, but they do not have as much green sheen as Black Australorps. They grow very slowly and are a poor choice for the production of broiler meat; however, the hens may be expected to weigh 9 pounds and are a good source of fowl meat, and brown shelled eggs. Standard weights at maturity are males-13 lbs. and hens-10 lbs.

Blue Swedish DucksPicture courtesy of Berg's Hatchery
A very elegant bird that is similar in size to the Rouen Duck. The oddity of these birds is that only 50% hatch in the blue-grey, 25% hatch as silver ducklings and 25% hatch as black-white by crossing the silver with the black and white you obtain 100% blue-grey ducks. This bird is very hardy and calm. A great addition to your back yard flock.

Welsh Harlequin Ducks
The Welsh Harlequin is a fairly new breed. They are becoming a very popular breed due to their multipurpose characteristics. They have excellent egg production abilities and the instinct to sit and hatch a nest full of ducklings. They are calm, inquisitive and excellent foragers.
They can also make an outstanding dressed bird as their under feathers are almost exclusively white making their carcass as pretty as a pure white bird. Interestingly, they can be sexed after hatching with 90% accuracy by their bill color. Darker bills mean a male and lighter bills ending in a dark spot are normally females. Within several days this distinction disappears. They are also a beautiful bird, especially the feather patterns and colors on the adult females.

Assorted Indian Runner DucksPicture courtesy of Berg's Hatchery
The unique aspect of Runner Ducks is their slender, upright stance. This enables them to move around much more quickly than most other breeds of ducks. Because of their speed and herding instinct, Runners are often used for training sheep dogs. They originally came from Southeast Asia. Many different colors of Runners have been developed, including the fawn and white, the Black, Blue and Chocolate.

Brown egg layers - Frey's Hatchery
Rhode Island Red Pictures courtesy of Frey's Hatchery
The Rhode Island Red is used in most crossbred varieties available today. Its bloodlines flow in most brown egg breeds throughout the world. It is a good producer of large brown eggs, yet quiet and easy to handle. Both male and female are dark red in colour, and at end of lay the hens weigh approximately 5 lbs.
Barred Plymouth Rock Pictures courtesy of Frey's Hatchery
This veteran of all the brown egg breeds is still available in quantities. For many years, they were almost extinct, as many poultrymen were carried away with the new crossbreeds. Every superior breed will prove its worth in the end, and these have made a comeback mainly because of their good meat qualities, combined with good brown egg production. People in the fly-tying business say that the Barred Plymouth Rock cockerels carry the best "cape feathers" for that type of use. Both pullets and cockerels are grey barred in colour, with the pullet being a bit darker. Pullets will weigh 5 to 6 lbs. at end of lay.

The pullets are an exceptionally quiet bird in the laying pen.
Red X Columbian Rock Pictures courtesy of Frey's Hatchery
This bird is a very hardy dual-purpose breed and its excellent performance has won wide approval for small flocks over the last 30 years. The pullets are reddish-brown in colour, very quiet and easy to handle, and have a body weight of close to 6 lbs. at end of lay. The eggs are rich brown in colour, with good shell texture and interior quality. Males grow up white with some black markings.
New Hampshire X Barred Rock

This cross produces a very hardy chick, as it springs from two of the oldest common breeds, which nick together exceptionally well. These are unusually quiet birds, and very attractive. Pullets have a beautiful red comb on a jet-black body, laced with brown on the neck and breast. They lay a good-sized brown-shelled egg and reach 6 lbs. at end of lay. Males are a dark barred colour.

Red Sex-Link
Pictures courtesy of Frey's Hatchery
This top producer is doing well all over the world. Test results from Europe and Canada show that it equals most other brown hybrids. Body weight at 18 weeks is about 3 1/2 lbs., and after one year of laying about 4 1/2 to 5 lbs. Egg production at 72 weeks of age can be 305 to 315 eggs. Pullets are reddish-brown in colour with white under feathers. Males are white with a few red markings on the feathers.
Black Sex-Link Pictures courtesy of Frey's Hatchery
This specially developed layer is one of the top egg producers of large brown eggs. The Black Sex-Link is known and used worldwide, and performs well in all types of conditions. Its extensive breeding background shows up in the large and jumbo eggs. The pullets are jet black with a bit of red tinge on the neck and breast. They grow to about 5 lbs. at end of lay. The males are a dark barred colour, similar to Barred Rocks. The black colour tends to absorb light, so we recommend brighter or more intense lighting for top egg production.

Meat breeds - Frey's Hatchery
White Rock X Broilers Picture courtesy of Frey's Hatchery
These extra heavy meat-type birds are bred for meat only. Their strength is in their efficient conversion of feed into meat. They are basically white in colour, and the pullets can be grown to 8 or 9 lbs., and the cockerels from 10 to 12 lbs. If purchased as non-sexed, the fighting of the cockerels is reduced. Pullets will substitute well for capons. Cornish Game Hens are produced by growing pullets of this breed to 2 lbs. live weight.

Frey's Special Dual Purpose Picture courtesy of Frey's Hatchery
This breed is a combination of some of the heaviest dual purpose breeds still in existence. It was developed for those who want a hardy, healthy chicken with firm and flavourful meat. Mortality is very low in this breed, and weak legs and heart attacks are almost unheard of. The females are a rusty red in colour and are generally quiet. The females will grow to approximately 6 lbs. live weight at about 15 weeks. As females approach maturity (15- 20 weeks), they tend to put on fat, so if larger-size females are desired, we suggest a diet lower in protein and energy. The males are white and may have dark markings on their backs. Males will grow to approximately 8 lbs. live weight at 15 weeks.

Waterfowls - Frey's Hatchery
White Pekin Ducklings Picture courtesy of Frey's Hatchery
This Danish hybrid is considered one of the best in the world. White Pekins have superior feed conversion and very rapid growth. They are ideal for commercial growers who run batches through their barns in 8-week cycles and have a market for uniform-sized young ducklings.
For those customers who prefer Pekin ducks, but do not intend to process them at such a young age, these ducklings will do well when they are fed less grower and allowed to fend for themselves around the barnyard or pond.
Rouen Ducklings Picture courtesy of Frey's Hatchery
These attractive ducks have the same feather colouring as their cousins the Mallards, but are about twice as large and cannot fly, so you need have no fear of losing them. The drakes have green heads and silvery feathers on the breast. The ducks are brown with a fine silver pencilling effect and a blue wing patch.
Along with Pekins, Rouens are good for algae control on the pond. They make excellent ducks for the freezer when fully mature and fattened in the fall. Rouens, however, are not intended for the commercial producer, who should be raising Pekins or Muscovies.
White Muscovy Ducks Picture courtesy of Frey's Hatchery
The South American Incas, so it's said, domesticated these quackless red-carnucled ducks centuries ago. Muscovy duck has been widely renowned for its distinctive flavour, firm flesh, and high yield after cooking - Muscovies have more breast meat, smaller bones, and less fat than other ducks. The drakes weigh about 10lbs and the hens around half the size. For the traditional roasting duck with that fine "ducky" flavour, you need to raise them at least 14 weeks. The feed efficiency will drop as the birds get older and heavier, but the improved meat quality and better dressing percentage will make it worthwhile. These bare red faced ducks are efficient weed eaters but will also love your garden if you let them have the chance.

The ringneck pheasant was first introduced to North America from China in 1881. It is perhaps the most well-known game bird in the world. The male has a dark head, distinct white ring around the neck, dark red breast feathers, and varying colourful patterns on the wings, back and tail. The female is a light brown with varied darker patterns on the whole of her body.
